Throne Toilet Rail Support systems came about as a result of an occupational therapist, Helen, becoming dissatisfied with toilet support equipment available in the marketplace. Having worked in Home Modifications for eight years, Helen was unable to recommend much of the equipment available. She developed a concept of support which overcame many of the deficiencies present in available equipment.

The concept initially consisted of placing the support closer to the toilet users body in order to allow that person to more easily lower themselves onto the toilet and to push u rather than pull themselves up from the toilet. The concept included a safety factor in that the apparatus had to be fixed. Better still if there was no contact with the floor, then the safety factor would be even more satisfactory in that the equipment would not impede the user. Therefore it became obvious that such apparatus should be fixed to the toilet pan. So the Throne Rail Support system concept was born with the motto “NO WALLS, NO FLOOR”. The OT developed a Rail which could be installed on the toilet pan so that the pan and rail became a rigid fixture.

The OT recognised that one design of Rail would not satisfy a majority of needs, so she developed four basic models (Standard, Splayed, Sloped and
Wraparound) which collectively answer the needs of many people such as Frail Aged, MS, CO etc. In the intervening time she expanded the range to include a Fold Down Rail, Children’s Rails and a Step for a Child.

The most recent development has been the Spacer, which is fixed under the toilet seat, and becomes part of the toilet decor. It eliminates accidents which do occur with a number of “Toilet Raisers” which only sit on the toilet pan and its unobtrusive to able body users.
